Smolyar started karting in 2012 where he went on to claim bronze medal in the Rotax Cup Challeneg Mini and win the MOJO Cup Mini. He continuted to move up in karting, heading in to 2013 by winning the Rotax Max Championship in the Moscow Regiuon, the MOJO Cup (Rostov-on-Don) and the Russian Winter Competition, followed by silver in the Rotax Max Championship Moscow Region and the Rotax Max Challenge Mini. Smolyar went on to win a bronze medal in the Rotax Junior Cup in 2014 and won the Russian Karting Championship and Karting Winter cup Russia in 2015.
2016 was Alexander’s last year in karting before moving up to single-seaters in 2017. He finished off his karting career with bronze at the IV Round CIK FIA European Championship in Belgium and winning the Tropheo Margutti and the WSK Night Edition. He headed in to Formula 4 next where he competed alongside SMP Racing in the SMP F4 NEZ Championship and the F4 Spanish Championship. He finished 3rd overall, taking 217 in the SMP F4 and second overall, taking 294 in F4 Spanish, clutching seven wins and 13 podiums.
In 2018, Smolyar made the move to Eurocup Formula Renault and Formula Renault Northen European Cup with Tech 1 Racing. His year wasn’t as successful as other years, only managing to take 12th and 17th. He continued with the Eurocup Formula Renault Championship with R-ace GP the following year, taking 3 wins and 10 podiums, placing 3rd in the standings.
2020 FIA Formula 3 Season
For the 2020 season, Alexander Smolyar is making the move to F3 where he’ll race with ART Grand Prix as the teams second rookie alongside Théo Pourchaire and returning driver Sebastián Fernández who’s made the move from Campos Racing.
